1849-55 Dug Cobalt Blue Iron-pontiled Knickerbocker 10-side Ny Soda Bottle
Intact antique american mid-nineteenth century william pond "knickerbocker" cobalt bue multi-sided soda water bottle. The cylindrical 10-sided iron pontiled bottle retains the intact applied blobtop with slop and heavy whittling, on a squat and tapered neck.

Trace amounts of iron from pontil rod are evident on the base. Embossed vertically down alternating panels is knicker / bocker / sodawater / 164.18-st.

Crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including whittling, bubbles, and asymmetry. The vibrant blue glass has not been tumbled, so appears somewhat hazy or opaque. Samuel smith (also of new york) produced a soda water around the same time with the same name and address embossed on it, indicating that 164 18th street may have been a bottling house shared by both businesses. Very few of these bottles embossed with the merchant's initials are found.

Measures 7 1/4 inches in height. Harmen jansen knikkerbakker (whose name was later anglicized to knickerbocker, originally meant "baker of marbles") was a dutch immigrant who migrated to the newly renamed english colony of new york in 1674.
