Antique NY Stoneware Beer Bottle with Cobalt, E. DeFreest, Troy (Lansingburg) 1850

Description : A fine, pre-Civil War Stoneware Beer Bottle with maker advertising and cobalt decoration, 1-Quart capacity, New York State origin, c. Wheel-thrown cylindrical form with tapered shoulder and Blob Top finish. Brush-Decorated from the shoulder up to the rim with bold blue Cobalt. Impressed near the lower shoulder with a cobalt-washed stamp: LEMON BEER / DEFRIESET [sic]. Additional Notes : There are also some family ties to nearby hamlet of Defreestville, NY where David DeFreest owned and operated the village tavern.

Condition : Very Good++ with strong color and desirable Upstate NY maker. Rim with moderate wear, including small chips/flakes and glaze loss from use, as shown. Cobalt Shoulder has been Brush-Decorated with cobalt (rather than simply dipped), giving it an interesting and highly-unusual Swirled appearance.

Stamp : DEFREEST is misspelled DEFRIESET, as shown. Body is clean and undamaged with a shiny, salt-glazed finish. There is some minor case wear noted around the immediate shoulder (these early stoneware bottles were reused over and over). No cracks, no repairs, no restoration work. Highly appropriate for any collection.

See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures 10-5/8H x 4-1/4W overall with a base diameter of 3-5/8.
