F&M Schaefer Beer New York Wiener Style Beer vintage Bottle & PRE-PROHIBITION Label. This is a highly-displayable 9-1/2, 12 oz. Machine-made bottle in fair-to-good condition that shows plenty of wear, but does not have any cracks or chips. There is a minor 1/2 scrape at the edge of the heavy base that may be the result of case wear.
This bottle might be pre-Prohibition from the World War I era, although an H 28 code embossed on the bottom could indicate that it was made between 1924-35 by Hemingray Glass Co. The world-famous maker of glass insulators. Was moving its brewing operations from 51.St & Park Avenue just north of Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, to a new plant along the East River in Brooklyn, where the Schaefer brand would become even more famous years later as the radio and TV sponsor of the Brooklyn Dodgers. This label is in good condition, with minor edge wear and a 1/2 tear on the right edge that closed-up nicely when the label was affixed. No type or graphics were affected by the tear.
I brush-cleaned this bottle 30 years ago, but did not attempt to polish it before I affixed the vintage label seen in the photo. Collectors who may want to remove the label should note that I used water-soluble standard beverage label glue for this project, so I assume this label can be soaked, removed, and recovered intact. This bottle was unearthed in 1988 during excavation of the former site of Madison Square Garden Bowl at 48. Street and Northern Boulevard in Long Island City, NY. As you can see from the photos on this listing, the embossed letters that encircle the base are fully-legible, but do show substantial wear. They read F&M Schaefer Brwg. Meanwhile, the famous Schaefer Brwg. Barrel logo is in good condition, as shown in photo. FYI, The Garden Bowl was built by MSG in 1929-32 as a massive 72,000 seat outdoor venue in Queens for events difficult to stage indoors during Summers in Manhattan in the days before air conditioning. In its short lifespan, the MSG Bowl was the scene of many championship fights, including one of boxings most famous upsets, the Heavyweight title won by James J.
Braddock over Max Baer on June 13, 1935. This bout was central to the plot of the 2005 movie Cinderella Man starring Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger and Paul Giamatti. The item "F&M Schaefer Beer New York Wiener Style Beer vintage Bottle & PRE-PRO Label" is in sale since Tuesday, March 3, 2020.
