SAND'S / IODIDE OF SARSAPARILLA / NEW YORK" The Bottle has an Incredibly Crudely, Applied-Double-Collar Top / "Lip-Finish, which is all Crooked, Crizzled + Almost Dripping Glass. The Sides of the Bottle are Rippled, with "Whittle-Marks" + there are Some Nice, Air-Bubbles, that are Winding through out the Bottle. The Base of the Bottle is Seen, to have a Very Deeply "Kicked-Up" Open-Pontil-Scar, which is Really Impressive. CONDITION: The Bottle is in Exceptional "About Perfect", Condition w/ NO FORMS OF "DAMAGE", NO CHIPS, NO CRACKS, NO OPEN-BUBBLES, NO "POT-STONE RADIATIONS", NO ABRASIONS, NO SCUFFS, NO BRUISES, NO "FLEA-BITES", NO DISTRACTING STAINING, NO "ISSUE", NO DINGS.The Bottle May / May-not, have been "Pro-Cleaned / Tumbled" from the Looks, of it, but the "Whittle-Marks" + the Crudeness, does not appear to have been at-all Compromised, if so. Very Clean + Very Nicely Displaying!! Sand's / Druggist / Medicine Proprietor from NYC, during the Early 1800's. The Frequently Seen, Variants, are the Large "SAND'S GENUINE SARSAPARILLA / NEW YORK" + The Small-Eight-Sided, Rectangular Shaped "SAND'S SARSAPARILLA / NEW YORK". I had never seen, (or knew even did there exist) This Particular Bottle, before Finding it, For Sale, Several Years ago. It is listed by John "Digger" O'dell, as a "5-Star Rarity" in His Book "The Pontil Medicine Encyclopedia" + was Priced from 350-900.00 Dollars.
I don't know how many examples, of this Bottle, are in Existence, Today, but I would highly guess, that may be just a very few, Probably. The Sands brothers (Abraham, David & William) established their business at 100 Futon Street in the prominent Granite Buildings (pictured above) in New York City around 1835. Their Sands Sarsaparilla was first introduced at this time and was one of the many 19th-century patent medicines to emerge on the market as a sure cure for any and all afflictions.
Chemists and Apothecaries, they soon would become one of New Yorks largest drug wholesalers. Braham opened his first retail drug store sometime around 1840. In 1842 he expanded his horizons and opened a wholesale store at another location installing his brother David in the original retail store. By 1843, Sands has published a pamphlet (see further below) on the curative properties of their sarsaparilla product. By 1851, David retired and was replaced by his brother William and the firm was listed as A.
They were advertising regularly in national newspapers (see further below). After 1851, Sands & Co.Became primarily a wholesale drug operation.
