General - Early American, Pre-Civil War Era 10-sided Soda Water Bottle. Hand blown, hand applied rounded taper, iron pontil base.

Bottle has Name, Address and Date embossed, a seldom seen combination for bottles of this type. KNICKER - BOCKER - SODA WATER - 164. 1848, on Five of the panels, the other Five panels are blank. Knickerbocker was not any part of the Proprietors name.

It basically comes from a word New York author Washington Irving used in a book in 1809, to signify a New Yorker who could trace his or her ancestry to the original Dutch settlers. It also refers to pants worn by the early Dutch settlers called "Knickerbockers" or "Knickers". Glassworks - Most likely a nearby Eastern Glass House. Color - Deep Cobalt Blue. Size - 7-1/4" Tall and 2-5/8" at the base.

Sturdy glass, weighs in at 15.4 ounces. Late 1840s to Early 1850s.

Condition - Very Nice clean, crude example. Extraordinary William Pond color, style and form. Mostly clear and clean glass. Also see full condition noted above. Excellent, full 7/8 inch kicked-up iron pontil base with a very generous amount of reddish/grayish pontil rod residue left, complete with a ridge of glass and a vent/mold dot, next to the pontil scar.

A very nice example of a pontil mark or scar. Whittle, mold and stretch marks present on the glass.

Bottle stands slightly uneven (unsymmetrical) when placed on a flat surface and appears crooked when viewed from the side, please see photo 3. Crudely blown glass from a bygone era for certain.

If you are looking for a "Brand New, Pristine, Perfect or Unblemished" example, this is not the one. Summary - Very nice example of a Pontil Era New York City 10-sided Soda Water. Nice Bottle for New York City or New York State Bottle/Glass collections, or would be a fine addition to any collection. More old bottles to follow.
