1840's Light Emerald Green Glass Knickerbocker Soda Bottle Ny Smith
Rare intact and all original and intact mid-nineteenth century light emerald green soda bottle manufactured for sam smith in new york. The diminutive bottle has a slim body and long neck finished with an applied tapered collar. The front body is embossed with casewear near the shoulder, s. Smith's / knickerbocker / mineral & soda / waters / new york. At the base is a kickup with residue from the iron pontil.

Side seams evidence use of a keyed hinge mold. Crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture. The bottle sustains only minor surface wear, and no cracks or chips.

Harmen jansen knikkerbakker (whose name was later anglicized to knickerbocker, originally meant "baker of marbles") was a dutch immigrant who migrated to the newly renamed english colony of new york in 1674. Two bottlers, william pond and samuel smith, separately produced a number of soda and mineral waters as well as porters and ales embossed with the knickerbocker name. Some variants of the men's bottles have the same address embossed as well, indicating that 164 18th street may have been a bottling house shared by both businesses. Measures 7 inches in height.
