1870s ANTIQUE Invigorating MANHOOD RESTORER BOTTLE Dr. L. D. Broughton NEW YORK
Description : Billed as an invigorating, blood purifying, manhood restorer, this formula was developed by none other than the "The Godfather of American Astrology, " Dr. Broughton was born in England, later immigrating to United States as a boy in 1863. His family landed in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.
After practicing medicine in Philadelphia for eight or nine years, Dr. Broughton ran afoul of regulators, who ultimately pushed him out of the state.
In 1869, Broughton move to New York City, opening a clinic on 66 West 4th St, in Manhattan. You will notice the bottle has a United States revenue sticker attached.
It's a 4ยข (four cent) sticker with George Washington on the front. This type of sticker debuted in 1860, running through 1872, when it was no longer being printed.The revenue stamp, along with my familiarity with Dr. Broughton's biography, helps me narrow down the likely age of this bottle. In the 19th century, astrology was dusted off, and challenged with the discovery of the outer planets. However, in mundane astrology, we can see that the job of rediscovery had worked rather well.
Broughton's method was traditionally classical, and his method seemed to work quite well, with Broughton even predicting Lincoln's assassination, and later, McKinley's. Condition : Other than the cork, which has a partially broken off top, this bottle is simply pristine. There remains a small amount of the dark brown medicine / liquid (it lightly coats part of the lower glass). I have not seen another bottle from Dr. Please let me know if you have additional information about the good doctor or this bottle.
