Up for sale is an antique G. Merchant Gargling Oil medicine bottle from Lockport, New York. Merchant's Gargling Oil was one of the more successful quack cures/medicines of the Victorian era, a topical liniment prescribed as "Good for Man or Beast" and marketed as such. The medicine's huge success around the turn of the century leads to a wide variety of different molds, colors, and sizes for bottle collectors to seek out. This is the more desirable "large size", standing 7.25" tall with a 3" by 2 base.
It has indented "tombstone" panels on the front and back, with rounded rectangular panels on either side. The front is embossed GARGLING OIL // LOCKPORT N. And the other panels and base are blank. It has a drippy applied tapered lip. Condition is excellent - sparkling bubbly quality and clarity to the glass with no chips, cracks, or scratches. There are two small (1/8" and 1/16") flakes off the lip from where the cork was pried out during during usage, and a ping on the neck, but no damage besides those. Each is only visible on very close inspection and the bottle displays exceptionally well. Merchant Gargling Oil Lockport NY Medicine/Cure Bottle 1880s BIM" is in sale since Sunday, July 26, 2020.
