Stoneware Beer Bottle with cobalt accents, Rensselaer County, NY, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with tapered shoulder and tooled, blob top mouth. Impressed on the shoulder with a crisp, cobalt-washed stamp reading: DW DEFREEST. Reverse shoulder with a slip-trailed cobalt R. Notes : This bottle likely has ties to DeFreestville , a small hamlet in North Greenbush, NY.
The hamlet was named after the DeFreest family, who owned and operated a local tavern. The R was probably used to indicate Root Beer as the contents.
The base and upper rim have expected wear, and there are remnants of a very old cork lodged in the mouth. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. No cracks or repaired damage. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. 1-Quart capacity; measures 10-1/4H x 4W overall with a base diameter of 3-3/4.
