I always enjoy researching and discovering the history of the bottles that I find so if you are interested read the story below.

Well it is always great to know the full story. How did this box full of bottles come to find its way into my collection? It must have been pretty good to be one of the Greene brothers.

They were poster boys for the quack medicine Toadstool Millionaires as they became to be known in a book of the same name. Here is some background from the Readers Digest; Dr. Rueben Greene was a doctor in NYC who treated nervous disorders with one prescription that was quite successful.

It was called Nervura, "The Great Blood & Nerve remedy". In short he made a fortune which was shared with his sons, Doctors Jarad Alfonzo and Frank E. In the summer of 1889 Dr. His brother constructed the Windermere Estate while J. Alfonzo constructed the Roxmont Castle.

He changed the name to the Roxmont. In later years it was more popularly known as Belle of the Isles. Lake Winnipesaukee Museum information shows that Dr. Greene (Jarad) came to the Lakes Region in 1885. And Jarad certainly enjoyed his wealth and fame. He owned the Lake Winnepesaukee Inn and was the Mayor of Laconia. Levi Blake, jovial proprietor of the Island Home, a summer hotel adjoining Dr. S estate on Long Island, often acted as straight man to the doctors rapid-fire wit. On one occasion when Levi was feeling poorly, as he would have expressed it, Dr. Suggested, Why dont you try a bottle of Nervura, Levi? Snorted Levi, Id just as soon have a glass of well water. It would probably do you just as much good, was the quick reply. Did you ever hear of anybody who was helped by Nervura? I did, answered the doctor. It is perhaps needless to say that the loudest laughter came from Levi Blake. But it wasnt always smooth sailing.

The government did finally bring charges of fraud against Jarad and Frank. Other References and a perfect title check it out a great read for quack medicine buffs.
