Possibly one of a kind Mighty Mouse Owl Drug Company bottle, stands a whopping 11.25 tall, in beautifully restored condition. The owl and mortar on this bottle measure 6.25 inches tall from the base of the mortar, to the top of the ear. This is the largest known glass bottle made by the Owl Drug Company--possibly unique in the world, with the early rounded shoulders and a huge Mighty Mouse Owl embossed in the glass.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no other known example of this bottle in existence. I searched for this bottle for years before finding it in an obscure collection. It was once owned by a renowned collector, who (decades ago) ground about 1/8 off the top of the rim to remove a small chip. At the time, he didn't realize its value.
All of the Mighty Mouse bottles are rare. It might be years before you find another one for sale in any size. All Mighty Mouse owls were embossed on clear bottles with rounded shoulders, which indicate they were one of the first bottles made by TODCO, which was founded in 1892 and opened its first store on Market Street in San Francisco. Before 1914, and the advent of the automatic bottle machine, all TODCO bottles were blown in a mold with a hand-tooled lip.
I started collecting Owl Drug Company bottles in 1980, after discovering a set of poison bottles in a glass case on a table while walking through an outdoor flea market in Fresno, california. Two brothers eagerly shared their excitement over collecting these bottles, and happily talked with me about their collecting experiences for about two hours. I was hooked and began looking for these bottles in antique stores, flea markets, bottle shows and basements all over California. The variations and colors of TODCO bottles are exceptional. The different types of birds are collectible in themselves--such that the various owls have been named by collectors over the decades.
Names likeAdonis, Chesty Dan, Flathead, Goofy, Grandpappy, Joe Cap & Gown, The Judge, Mighty Mouse, NaziMova, Potbelly Pete, Pretty Boy and Sarah, have caused hearts to flutter for years. A book, written in the 1960's by Al Jensen titled "Old Owl Drug Bottles and Others" was one of the first publications to provide descriptions and photographs of these bottles to promote collecting in this field. I've seen examples of the rarer owl bottles sell for several thousand dollars each. The Grandpappy Salt, the Grandpappy Poison, and the Sarah Citrate are examples of these rare birds. You will receive the exact item shown in the photo, so photographs are part of the item description.I'll pack it carefully. If you see an issue in my listing, please bring it to my attention so I can correct it.
